What do you stuff couch cushions with

Now my seat cushions of the sofa could use some help. I thought about doing this but don't want a stiff result. Sofa is in very good condition - a chenille fabric which I had a pro upholstery person tell me chenille has a tendency to crush the insides too quickly - stay away from.

I have opened them up before and worked at re-adjusting the insides with not much success. I'm hoping this reader or another may have a solution.

Please help. Don't get the memory foam kind, just the regular kind. A twin size pad on sale can be pretty inexpensive to chop up and use. Much cheaper than foam and easier to handle. You can create layers of them if you choose to or just add a layer on top of the existing cushion you already have. They also work great for window seat pads, pet beds, etc. It might be the smooth and sturdy stuffing that won't shift or deflate that you are looking for.

Another idea that may sound crazy, but old blankets can work for stuffing as well. I am so happy I read this post. Best information ever. My little Malti-poo Bailee sits on the top of the cushions all of the time. Need I tell you how my cushions looked. They are beautiful now and Bailee is ever so comfortable. Thanks to you and the wonderful person who shared the information with you!!!!!!!!!

Who knew. Thanks again!!!!!! What a great tip, can't believe I never thought of it myself!! I have a couch with removable back cushions I bought from Lazy Boy store about 15 years ago and its held up great, but I would love a new one! Cushions are getting a little saggy, will definitely try this trick!

A miracle! But please tell me that your living room doesn't look like this every day. Amalia xo. And who knew there were zippers back there? I'm going to see if my couch has zippers there as well. BUT I have serious doubts that I can de-slump my attached back cushions on my couch, seeing that my four dogs two small and two large all take turns laying up there.

So my cushions are way more slumpy slumpier? Your house looks amazing, LOVE that family be a blessing reminder sign! That is amazing!!!! Oh but I wish that's as slouchy as my cushions were. My dog who thinks he's a cat insists on sleeping on the top of the cushions. I don't think my cushions have a prayer. They're about as wide as they are tall at this point. It's a good thing the dog is so cute When I read this, I think the heavens parted I heard trumpets sound triumphantly and the hallelujah choir sung their hearts out My voice was one with the hallelujah choir!

I counted When my baby outgrew his crib bumpers i shoved them in the couch cushions and poof instantly firm cushions again. Brought our 8 year old couch cushion right back! It can be difficult to find sofas that have loose backs! MY repeating problem are 2 cocker spaniels that really think it is cozy and comfy up there and have a great view of the neighbourhood dogs as they parade by! Please thank your wonderful reader for me too!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did not know I had zippers either. I had been irritated at myself for letting the saleswoman convince me that attached cushions were better than loose when I knew better. Now I can forgive myself and the saleswoman ;. We had a chair that did that once and I stuffed a whole pillow inside. Worked like a charm! You really had me laughing at the slippity slumpity!! By the way, we bought a new couch in the past year and when the cushions started slippity slumping in a week, I made them take it back.

This must be a miracle!!!!! I have zippers on my slumpity cushions too. Who knew?? Our cat is always laying on them, and I thought slumpy was the way it was going to be forever.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this. I am sending you 72 exclamation points.. You are the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When we moved last summer, we bought two couches for the new living room.

Almost immediately, I knew I had made a mistake in buying back cushions that were attached. When I complained to my sales lady, she told me the pillows had zippers. Because the couches were expensive, I am stuck with them, probably for life since I will soon be 70! Love it. Please tell me the price???? Jean, I got the sign in partnership with Kirkland's! Amazingly wonderful post, KariAnne!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a couch like that in our upstairs sitting room. Big hug to you! Who knew??? My couch has cushions attached on the bottom. You know, the ones with the cushion and then the shallow cushion topper on top of that?

After awhile the topper part is hanging over the edge looking like it has it's tongue stuck out to every passer by. Any tips on how to fix that?

Love, love you blog!!!! Pure genius!!! I just got up from the computer to look at mine…and lo and behold! Please hug and thank your astute reader! I made this decorating mistake…. Well, in a way it is. You wanted unattached cushions. Let me tell you what happens. They slip and slide. Uh Huh!! You are sitting comfortably eating your popcorn watching Indiana smear Kentucky :- and all at once you notice you are horizontal.

Well, by golly you started off in a sitting position but now your cushions are going every which way. You want your cushions attached so when you jump out of your chair for that big play then sit down in satisfaction that the play was executed those cushions are still there when you sit down.

Now, for my other sofa, I'll have to go check it out for zippers. Great tip!!! I have loose back cushions and they're in good shape but my seat cushions sag like I'm still sitting in them long after I've left the room. So for years now I've been stuffing them with extra polyfill. Sometimes it will look a little lumpy but will flatten out after a bit of sitting. I've been sharing this tip with friends, relatives, people on the elliptical next to me at the gym, the lady stuck behind me at the grocery store, total strangers on facebook No need to run when you see me coming anymore.

My new sofa and chair both have attached cushions!!! My last sofa and chair had UNattached cushions. Those were no picnic either. I was constantly pulling them off the sofa pounding, stomping and otherwise beating them into submission. They looked lovely when I put them back on the sofa I thought the attached cushions would solve the problem. Apparently not! My new furniture has zippers on the bottom of the cushions.

My next sofa might be a tufted back. Problem solved! Who knew? This is truly an epic discovery!!! Honestly I would have never known there was a zipper there. I am currently sofa shopping so I will definitely keep this in mind. Thank you Thank you!!!!!!!! I have zippers too! On the weekend, I'm off to get some stuffing. However, I do have a down duvet that is ready for the bin that might do the trick. No more slumps cushions for me. First of all, your couches talk - although it's a tad eerie.

They keep whispering "stay, stayyy, we are as comfy as we look, you know you wanna try us, try ussss". Secondly, you've seen our couch, all pillows back and seat are removable.

The slump, too. All the time. Then when my cushion was about halfway in, I stood it up, and let it lean against the wall for support. I just kept stuffing in that right to left motion again until it went all the way down to the bottom. TIP: You will need to push the quilt batting down — or it will get caught up in the zipper — trust me!! Well, who are we kidding? That was a fantastic post! Super helpful! I have an idea that could make stuffing the wrapped cushion back in the case easier.

Use strong plastic wrap to create a sling think of an open envelope around the wrapped cushion to make it slippery and it will slide right in the casing. You can then just pull out the sturdy but slippery plastic wrap before zipping. Hope this helps.

Thanks Erica — this is a genius idea!! Plus the plastic will also help keep the foam and batting from moving around I bet. This was so awesome thanks to your easy to follow instructions.

Thanks so much for putting such a great how to with links together! Thanks Valentine! I am going to try it soon, but just wanted to add that great tip here. Hi Lisa! Victorian homes were lined with fancy cushions and fabrics to give the occupants an air of wealth and status. Today the humble cushion is no longer an indicator of wealth but a hard-working provider of comfort to the masses. Advancements in technology have allowed the cushion to go from a soft object that is nice to sit on to a scientifically designed comfort-seating superstar.

Here are the most common materials that go into making a couch cushion. Batting is used to line the section between the upholstered fabric cover and the inner material. Batting helps create a softer barrier between something dense like foam core and the upholstery on the outside.

In addition to a softer layer, cushion batting also provides a protective layer between potential upholstery staining liquids and the inner cushion. When cleaning up after stains or spills , the less you have to clean, the better, and batting helps keep the damage a bit more limited.

Older batting was made from cotton or polyester material and is about an eighth of an inch to a quarter-inch thick. Down feathers can also be used as batting, but the practice less popular due to polyester being less expensive.

Cotton has been a popular cushion material for decades and is used in many sofa cushions as filling or batting. Cotton fibers are stuffed in the same way a teddy bear would be stuffed, into the cushion, creating a firm or loose cushion depending on the amount of cotton used. Cotton stuffing is one of the more rarely used materials in sofa stuffed cushions. Cotton is made from a plant fiber that is known for clothing and many other useful materials. Cotton stuffing is used much in the same way as the next stuffing item on our list, which is Polyester is the synthetic fabric alternative to cotton created in by British chemists John Rex Whinfield and James Tennant Dickson.

The fabric became associated with cheap clothing in the 80s but is a useful synthetic product that makes a great sofa cushion.

Polyester is primarily used in sofa backs and throw pillows which do not require as much support as seating cushions require.

Much like cotton is used, polyester stuffing is used to fill the cushion to whatever level of density the sofa design calls for. Polyester is a more affordable alternative to cotton and can be made in less time than cotton takes to grow. Memory foam and foam core are among the few good things brought about by the cold war space race in the 70s and 80s. NASA was in a big hurry to get to the moon, and they needed a lightweight material and could absorb impact better than any other materials.

The material that the scientists and engineers at NASA developed became known as memory foam. Foam core is used in cushions today as a solid block of foam, which is then put inside the cushion and surrounded by batting to create a softer surface. Foam core comes in various density levels that balance between soft and supportive. There are multiple types of foam available including gel foam, and memory foam, as well as various levels of firmness depending on the support needed.

From astronaut helmets and mattresses to your backside , memory foam has been supporting human comfort ever since. Today your couch cushions use foam core and memory foam in various density levels to provide both soft and supportive comfort.
